Tourism Trinidad Celebrates World Steelpan Month and World Steelpan Day

Published: Aug 23, 2023

Port of Spain, August 10, 2023 – Tourism Trinidad is proud to join hands with the global community in celebrating World Steelpan Month throughout August and, in particular, World Steelpan Day on August 11th. As the birthplace of the steelpan, Trinidad and Tobago takes immense pride in showcasing this remarkable musical instrument that holds a special place in the hearts of locals and captivates visitors from around the world.

Tourism Trinidad congratulates Pan Trinbago and by extension the pan fraternity during these exciting and important times for the national instrument.

Highlighting the significance of this annual celebration, Tourism Trinidad has directed its support for Pan Trinbago’s dynamic activities at Woodford Square on August 11th. The heart of Port of Spain will resonate with the melodious sounds of steelpan music as we present giveaways and offer engaging steelpan lessons to the public. This event serves as a testament to our commitment to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Trinidad and Tobago.

Additionally, on the occasion of World Steelpan Day August 11th, Tourism Trinidad will proudly sponsor a “Steelpan Experience” at the Piarco International Airport in collaboration with the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS). Both travellers and locals will have the unique opportunity to savour the enchanting sounds of our national instrument as they embark on their journeys or return home. This initiative is a reflection of our dedication to infusing the vibrant essence of Trinidad and Tobago into every visitor experience.

In partnership with various hotels across the country, visitors will find an array of information and memorabilia celebrating the steelpan, offering them a taste of our rich cultural tapestry and providing them with lasting memories of their time on our beautiful island. This is in keeping with our drive to keep both foreigners and locals informed on things to do during the soon to be concluded Commonwealth Youth Games – Trinbago 2023.

Carla Cupid, CEO of Tourism Trinidad, expressed her enthusiasm for the celebrations noting, “World Steelpan Month is not only a time for us to honour our unique cultural heritage but also an occasion to invite the world to experience the essence of Trinidad and Tobago. Our steelpan resonates with the spirit of our people and the beauty of our land. We are excited to share this celebration with everyone.”

All of this comes following the dedicated efforts of the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and the Arts, Senator Randall Mitchell, who took our cultural pride to the international stage. He successfully moved a resolution at the United Nations to declare August 11th as World Steelpan Day. This historic milestone acknowledges the global significance of the steelpan as an emblem of our shared humanity and cultural diversity.

Join us this August as we embrace the rhythm of our nation and celebrate the joy, innovation, and unity that the steelpan brings to our lives. Let us come together to honour our roots and create lasting memories that resonate far beyond our shores.
