Published: Feb 20, 2025
The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) and Tourism Trinidad Limited (TTL) have teamed up to enhance the promotion of healthier and safer tourism in Trinidad and Tobago, particularly during the upcoming 2025 Carnival. The collaboration focuses on addressing the public health risks associated with large-scale events like Carnival, where close gatherings can accelerate the spread of infectious diseases. As part of its Regional Tourism and Health Program (THP), CARPHA provided specialized training to 148 tourism stakeholders from various sectors, such as hospitality, transportation, and event organization, to help manage and mitigate health threats during mass gatherings.
The training, held on February 18, 2025, aimed to equip participants with the knowledge to prevent the spread of infectious diseases like respiratory illnesses, foodborne diseases, and vector-borne diseases. CARPHA’s Executive Director, Dr. Lisa Indar, emphasized the importance of building capacity to reduce health risks during major events like Carnival. TTL’s Interim CEO, Mr. Cornell Buckradee, expressed gratitude for CARPHA’s proactive approach in safeguarding public health and strengthening awareness among tourism stakeholders. This ongoing collaboration has seen over 1,500 individuals trained and numerous facilities certified in health and safety practices since 2016, contributing to safer tourism in Trinidad.
